The Extraction and Purification of DNA.
Deoxyribonucleic Acid, commonly referred to as DNA, is the molecule found in everything termed as living. The DNA molecule contains a genetic code that is for every organism, therefore, acting as a blueprint for continuous plans for any substance that the organisms do produce in the course of their lives. Some of the essential materials you will need for the extraction process include alcohol, meat tenderizer, split peas, dishwashing detergent probably in liquid form, a blender, a beaker or clear glass container, a stirring rod or a spoon. In the first procedure, blend at least a half cup of split peas in a cupful of water. With the soupy mixture you have got from blending, use a homogenous solution to separate the mixture. One may also consider keeping the extra solution just in case. After obtaining the solution, consider pouring some of it into a container up to a level of at least two inches, the solution used here should be adequate.
In the third step, you need to add at least a tablespoonful of the liquid dishwashing detergent on top of the solution. Then consider stirring the mixture slowly for about five minutes. The next step you should add a pinch of the meat tenderizer to the solution then stir for another five minutes. After stirring the mixture, drizzle some alcohol above the container. Consider adding the alcohol until you obtain a layer of three inches on the split peas solution. Peas are mostly used for this extraction because they are so rich in the molecule. Again the detergent is used to break down the membrane cell for it to release its contents and the meat tenderizer to dissolve the membrane nuclear for it to release the DNA inside. The alcohol is used to bring out the DNA strands.
